Dartmouth sits on the eastern shore of Halifax Harbour, looking straight across the water at downtown Halifax. Locals call it the City of Lakes, and for good reason: there are 23 lakes within its boundaries. It is a place where you can paddle before work, catch the ferry downtown, and be home in time for a walk around Sullivan's Pond. We have helped many families find their place on this side of the harbour, and it remains one of our favourite communities to share.
Dartmouth was founded in 1750, when the ship Alderney arrived with settlers who made their homes on the eastern side of the harbour. Long before that, the Mi'kmaq travelled an inland canoe route from Dartmouth Cove through the chain of lakes. That route later became the Shubenacadie Canal, which still shapes the community today. The Quaker Whaler House, built by whalers who came from Nantucket in the 1780s, is believed to be the oldest building in Dartmouth and is open to visitors in season. Dartmouth became a city in 1961 and joined the Halifax Regional Municipality in 1996, keeping its name and its strong sense of identity.
Water is part of everyday life here. Lake Banook, the first lake in the canal system, is home to canoe, kayak, rowing and dragon boat clubs, and it has hosted the Canoe Sprint World Championships several times, most recently in 2022. Paved paths around the lake and nearby Sullivan's Pond are busy with walkers, runners and cyclists year round.
A short drive north, Shubie Park is often called the jewel of Dartmouth. You will find wooded trails along the historic canal locks, a supervised beach, canoe and kayak rentals in summer, off leash areas for dogs, and the only fully serviced campground inside city limits.
Commuting is one of Dartmouth's real strengths. The Alderney ferry links downtown Dartmouth with downtown Halifax, and it is the oldest continuously running saltwater ferry service in North America, dating back to 1752. Two bridges, the Macdonald and the MacKay, connect drivers to the peninsula, and Highway 111 (the Circumferential) ties the community together. Halifax Stanfield International Airport is a straightforward drive away.
Burnside Park, along with the neighbouring City of Lakes Business Park, is home to nearly 2,000 businesses and is the largest business park in Atlantic Canada. Right beside it, Dartmouth Crossing brings together shops, restaurants and a movie theatre. Downtown Dartmouth has a character all its own, with independent cafes, breweries and restaurants, Alderney Landing's weekend farmers market and theatre, and waterfront parks with some of the best views of the Halifax skyline.
Dartmouth is really a collection of distinct neighbourhoods, each with its own feel:
Public schools in Dartmouth are run by the Halifax Regional Centre for Education (HRCE), which offers English, French Immersion and other programs across the community. School boundaries vary street by street, so we always recommend confirming the schools for a specific address directly with HRCE before you buy.
