Bedford sits at the head of the Bedford Basin, just minutes from downtown Halifax, and has long been one of the most sought after places to live in the region. It blends a small town feel, a beautiful waterfront and strong schools with quick access to the city and the highways. Families, professionals and downsizers all find something here, and we have been proud to help many of them call Bedford home.
Bedford's story begins in 1749, when Governor Edward Cornwallis built a road from the new garrison at Halifax toward the Minas Basin and Fort Sackville was established at the head of the basin. Scott Manor House, built around 1770 and the oldest house in Bedford, still stands on a hill overlooking the community and operates today as a museum. Bedford became a town in 1980 and joined the Halifax Regional Municipality in 1996, keeping the community pride that defines it.
DeWolf Park is the centrepiece of Bedford's waterfront, with a boardwalk along the Bedford Basin that continues past Lions Park along Shore Drive. It is also home to many of the summer celebrations during Bedford Days, from the Canada Day festivities to Movies in the Park and the Rubber Duck Dash. From the waterfront, the Bedford Sackville Connector Greenway follows the Sackville River, making it easy to walk or cycle between the two communities.
Bedford is one of the best connected communities in the region. The Bedford Highway leads straight toward Halifax, and Highways 101 and 102 put the airport, the Annapolis Valley and the rest of the province within easy reach. Shopping and services line the Bedford Highway and the newer commercial areas of Bedford West.
Bedford offers everything from established streets of mature trees and larger lots near the original town centre, to waterfront condos, to the newer subdivisions of Bedford West with modern family homes and townhouses. For a closer look at what makes the community special, read our post, Why Bedford Is One of the Best Places to Live. Neighbouring Hammonds Plains and Lower Sackville are also worth a look.
Public schools in Bedford are run by the Halifax Regional Centre for Education (HRCE), and French first language schools are also available in the area. Boundaries vary street by street, so we always recommend confirming the schools for a specific address with HRCE before you buy.
